Privacy Policy

Last updated: 12 June 2026

TechRoute is a free revision tool for students taking the Pearson T Level in Digital Support and Security. This policy explains what personal data it collects, why, and the choices you have. It is written in plain English because many of our users are under 18.

Who is responsible for your data

TechRoute is a personal, student-made project run by one individual (not a company). That individual is the data controller and decides why and how your data is used.

Contact for any privacy question or request: techroutelearning@outlook.com.

What we collect

  • Account details — your email address and password (handled securely by our login provider; we never see your password), and a display name you choose.
  • Optional profile photo — only if you add one.
  • Your learning progress — your RAG (red/amber/green) ratings, which topics you have completed, quiz scores, flashcard mistakes, and study streaks.
  • A "last active" timestamp — used only to show an anonymous "people online now" count. It is never linked to your name for other users.
  • Bug reports — only the details you choose to submit if you report a problem.

We do not collect your real name, address, location, or any payment details (donations are handled entirely by PayPal — we never see your card data).

Why we use it (lawful basis)

  • Consent — you create an account voluntarily so the app can save and sync your revision progress.
  • Legitimate interest — keeping the service working, secure, and free of abuse.

Children and young people

TechRoute is designed to be private by default for our under-18 users: there are no public profiles, no public leaderboard, and the only social feature is an anonymous count of how many people are online. We follow the spirit of the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code.

Who we share it with

We never sell your data. It is stored and processed by a small number of trusted providers acting on our behalf:

  • Supabase — database and login (data held in the EU/West region).
  • Cloudflare — hosting and delivery of the website.
  • Microsoft — our contact email and the contact form (Microsoft Forms), only for messages you choose to send us.
  • PayPal — only if you choose to make a donation.
  • YouTube (Google) — some topic pages offer optional videos. Nothing is loaded from YouTube unless you press play; embeds use YouTube's privacy-enhanced (no-cookie) mode.

Reference codes (how we keep things private)

To avoid handling your name when we don't need to, each account is given a short, meaningless reference code (for example "TR-7F3A9C"). When you submit a bug report we see only this code — not your name. You can find your code in Settings and quote it if you contact us. The link between the code and your account stays in our database and is only used if strictly necessary.

Cookies and local storage

We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. The app stores essential information in your browser's local storage (your login session and settings such as dark mode) so it works correctly. Clearing your browser data removes it.

How long we keep it

We keep your data while your account is active. If you delete your account it is permanently erased (see below). If you stop using TechRoute, you can ask us to delete your data at any time.

Your rights and how to use them

You can ask to access, correct, export, or delete your data, and to withdraw consent. The easiest way is from inside the app:

  • Request my data (in Settings) — we will send a copy of your data to your registered email address, within one month.
  • Delete my account (in Settings) — your account is scheduled for permanent deletion after a 14-day cool-off, which you can cancel any time in that window. This protects you against accidental deletion.

You can also email techroutelearning@outlook.com. Requests are reviewed and actioned by the controller.

If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian before creating an account or making a request.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how your data has been handled, contact us first. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. If we make a significant change we will note it here with a new "last updated" date, and where it affects your rights we will let you know in the app.
